FACT ‘ some forms of asbestos were not completely banned in the UK until 1999 and many asbestos containing materials were still manufactured up to the mid 1990′s, as such an asbestos survey is a legal requirement for all non domestic properties built before the year 2000.

From the early 1900′s it is estimated that over 6 million tonnes of asbestos were imported into the U.K. This asbestos was used in over 3000 documented building materials. Only an asbestos survey, carried out by a trained asbestos surveyor can identify the location of asbestos containing materials through an asbestos inspection and asbestos sample analysis in a UKAS accredited laboratory.

The main reason for this is that asbestos was used in sometimes quite small quantities, from just a few percent (but up to 100%) as part of the ingredients of other non asbestos containing materials such as; asbestos containing floor tiles and adhesives, asbestos containing linos, asbestos containing paper, asbestos containing textured coatings (commonly known as Artex), asbestos containing putty, asbestos containing sealants, asbestos containing floor bath panels, asbestos containing partition walls, asbestos containing doors, asbestos containing soffits and fascia panels, asbestos containing water tanks, asbestos containing insulation to pipes and heaters, asbestos containing roof tiles, asbestos containing cement roofs, asbestos containing packers around beams in floors, ceilings and walls, and as such the visual appearance of any building material may seem quite innocent but potentially hides a killer mineral ‘ asbestos.

An Asbestos Surveys is a legal requirement prior to any employed person working in a domestic or commercial property in the UK. The asbestos survey does not need to be conducted to the whole property if only a small section is due for alteration. For example, you can carry out and asbestos inspection of just the kitchen or bathroom, if those are the only rooms which are going to be worked in. The basic requirement is that if the fabric of the building is to be disturbed then this disturbance should be preceded by an inspection for asbestos containing materials.

Quoting published HSE statistics in 2010 there is approximately between 0.5 million and 2 million commercial buildings still with asbestos containing materials. Llewellyn of BRE suggested that 75% of commercial building contain some asbestos. This includes, corner shops, pubs, offices, factories, industrial buildings, basic work units, high street shops, hotels, in fact it can be present in any place of work, anywhere.

There are approximately 2.4 million domestic properties (this includes houses, flats and bungalows) with asbestos containing materials.

Increasingly insurance companies and solicitors are requesting that an asbestos survey is carried out prior to the completion of sale on properties built prior to the year 2000.

This year it is expected that 5000 people (nearly 14 people per day) will die of an asbestos related disease. By approximately 2020 this will have risen to 12000 people per year (nearly 33 people per day).

The highest risk groups of people are those working in the building and allied trades.

Using Transmission Electron Microscopy it has been shown that in the region of 60% of plumbers tested had been exposed to asbestos though company documents only showed that 20% had been working with asbestos containing materials.

An asbestos survey, (be this a refurbishment asbestos survey, Predemolition asbestos survey which have superseded the type 2 asbestos survey or management asbestos survey ‘ which has superseded the type 2 asbestos survey) carried out correctly can prevent these exposures, however the asbestos inspection has to be in place prior to works commencing. This is why the HSE have made it a legal mandatory requirement that persons in control of building premises and those in the building and allied trades, including, builders, plumbers, electricians, surveyors, architects, carpenters, shop fitters and demolition operatives have annual asbestos awareness training.

Head & neck cancer in India is ever increasing menace because of prevalent use of tobacco. Let us start to what is cancer? And what are head neck cancer? Normally, cells grow and divide to form new cells in an orderly way. They perform their functions for a while, and then they die. Sometimes, however, cells do not die. Instead, they continue to divide and create new cells that the body does not need. The extra cells form a mass of tissue, called a growth or cancer. Their growth invades normal structures near the tumor and spreads to other parts of the body.(metastasis) .So the cancer arising in head & neck region include oral cavity (mouth cancer)which comprises of tongue, gums, inner side of cheek (buccal mucosa), palate. then the other area which is affected is larynx, also called the voicebox, then pharynx which is a hollow tube about 5 inches long that starts behind the nose and leads to the esophagus (the tube that goes to the stomach) and the trachea (the tube that goes to the lungs).Other regions are nose and paranasal sinuses( hollow bones around the nose),salivary glands, thyroid etc. These cancers spread locally and to lymph glands in the neck.

The Most common cancer affecting the Indian population is cancer of the oral cavity of which tongue cancer is the highest in the world.

1 What are the causative factor for these cancers Tobacco (gutkha, paan, khaini, surti, beedi, cigarette) and alcohol use are the most important risk factors for head and neck cancers, particularly those of the oral cavity, oropharynx, hypopharynx, and larynx. There are an estimated 2.5 million cases of cancer in India at any given time. Nearly 800,000 cases were diagnosed in 2000 and there were 550,000 deaths due to cancer in that same year. Tobacco-related cancers account for almost one-third of all cancers in India–predominantly head and neck, lung, and esophageal cancers.

2 More than 5 million children in India are addicted to gutkha, a smokeless tobacco product that is a key driver behind the country’s soaring oral cancer rates.

Eighty-five percent of head and neck cancers are linked to tobacco use. People who use both tobacco and alcohol are at greater risk for developing these cancers than people who use either tobacco or alcohol alone. The other risk factors are poor oral hygiene and; Human papilloma virus (HPV) infection . There are certain stages before development of frank cancer which present as White patches (leukoplakia) in the mouth which does not get rubbed off or Red patches (Erythroplakia).

People who are at risk for head and neck cancers should come to us for check ups talk with their doctor about ways they can reduce their risk. They should also discuss how often to have checkups. So What are common symptoms of head and neck cancers? Symptoms of several head and neck cancer sites include a lump or sore that does not heal, a sore throat that does not go away, difficulty swallowing, and a change or hoarseness in the voice. The symptoms related to specific sites are Oral cavity. A white or red patch on the gums, tongue, or lining of the mouth; a swelling of the jaw that causes dentures to fit poorly or become uncomfortable; and unusual bleeding or pain in the mouth. Nasal cavity and sinuses. Sinuses that are blocked and do not clear, chronic sinus infections that do not respond to treatment with antibiotics, bleeding through the nose, frequent headaches, swelling or other trouble with the eyes, pain in the upper teeth, or problems with dentures. Pharynx Ear pain,Trouble breathing or speaking, frequent headaches, pain or ringing in the ears, or trouble hearing. Larynx. Pain when swallowing, or ear pain.

These symptoms may be caused by cancer or by other, less serious conditions. It is important to get checked with a specialist. How are head and neck cancers diagnosed? The specialist doctor (Head & Neck Surgeon) takes history &Physical examination then examines the affected following which endoscopy is done ,if anything is found suspicious tiny piece is taken for examination in the laboratory using microscope, if lesion is found then it needs to be found whether disease has spread from the site of origin the test which help in this are X-rays, CT (or CAT) scan is a series of detailed pictures of areas inside the head and neck created by a computer linked to an x-ray machine. Magnetic resonance imaging (or MRI), PET scan. After this patient is staged if disease is small confined then it is in stage I, if large but still confined to the site of origin- StageII, if spread to the lymph glands in the neck then Stage III, if spread to lungs, liver then patient is staged IVc.

Knowing the stage of the disease we plan the treatment which are best treated by a team of specialists. Thel team includes Head & Neck Oncologist ,pathologist ; medical oncologists; radiation oncologists; prosthodontists; dentists; plastic surgeons; dietitians; social workers; nurses; physical therapists; and speech-language pathologists (sometimes called speech therapists). The treatment plan is decided by joint meeting (TUMOR BOARD)of these specialist and blue print of the treatment is laid down in consultation with the patient. How are head and neck cancers treated?

If the in Stage I & II,surgery is done or managed by radiation only, for stage III surgery + radiotherapy is given, Stage IV only chemotherapy with symptom care.

The treatment plan for an individual patient depends on a number of factors, including the exact location of the tumor, the stage of the cancer, and the person’s age and general health. Surgery. Remove the cancer and some of the healthy tissue around it. Lymph nodes in the neck may also be removed (lymph node dissection), if the doctor suspects that the cancer has spread. Surgery may be followed by radiation treatment. Radiation therapy, also called radiotherapy. This treatment involves the use of high-energy beams to kill cancer cells. Radiation may come from a machine outside the body (external radiation therapy). Chemotherapy, also called anticancer drugs. This treatment is used to kill cancer cells throughout the body. Our motto is win against cancer by prevention, treatment and good rehabilitation.

At Dharamshila we are well equipped to tackle this cancer at whichever stage it comes, we are harping on prevention of these disease by conductive nationwide diagnostic and educative camps. In house we experienced and expert councillors for persons who want to leave tobacco but are not able to do so. We have educative brochures elucidating the harmful effects of tobacco consumption.

Mesothelioma is a rare but aggressive form of cancer that affects the mesothelium, a protective membrane over the lungs, heart, and other internal organs. It is divided into subcategories based on several different factors, including the progression of the disease, the type of cancerous cells involved, and the location of the primary cancerous growths. This article will explain the three types of mesothelioma based on the last factor, known as pleural, peritoneal, and pericardial mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma Subcategories

While mesothelioma can spread throughout the body as it progresses, it generally begins in one primary location. The three types of mesothelioma according to its location are:

Pleural mesothelioma: This disease affects the pleura, a segment of the mesothelium that covers and protects the lungs. It is the most common form of mesothelioma, making up about 75% of all diagnosed cases. Symptoms of this illness include a chronic cough, chest pain and shortness of breath.

Peritoneal mesothelioma: Up to 20% of mesothelioma cases are peritoneal mesothelioma. This disease attacks the peritoneum, a protective membrane over the abdomen. Symptoms of this form of mesothelioma include abdominal pain, persistent nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, and digestive problems.

Pericardial mesothelioma: This is the rarest form of mesothelioma, accounting for only about 5% of cases. This illness affects the pericardium, which is the part of the mesothelium that covers and protects the heart. Symptoms of pericardial mesothelioma include persistent chest pain, irregular heartbeats, shortness of breath, and fatigue.

When a patient is diagnosed with mesothelioma, it is important for his or her doctors to identify the subtype that he or she is suffering from. This knowledge can affect the treatment options that doctors will recommend. For example, different kinds of mesothelioma may present different kinds of surgical options, or respond differently to treatments such as radiation or chemotherapy.

You must have read a lot about the increasing number of prostate cancer cases in the country. I myself felt concerned about the rising statistics. To protect myself, I do a simple massage to prevent prostate cancer. This relief allows me to ensure the healthy state of my prostate. Read on to discover how to give yourself a massage and prevent prostate cancer from meddling in your life.

There are different ways that will help you combat the scenario of developing a prostate cancer. You should observe a proper diet. A proper eating habit should include a balanced diet. Do not consume large meat at all time. Get yourself some green leafy vegetables too. Also, have an active lifestyle, this is a natural way to rid of the toxins inside your body.

By simply doing the two advices I mentioned above, you may lessen the risk of having a cancer. However, you should still do it with a regimen that will directly affect the status of your prostate. So apart from changing my lifestyle, I also took some time to learn how to do prostate massage.

I do not think that prostate massage would be a whole new concept for you. If you are attending your yearly medical check-up, you already have an idea or at least a little bit of experience that is related and similar to the massage. When the doctor inserts his finger in your anus and checks on your insides, he is actually checking the health of your prostate. Yes, it is the most dreaded part on your annual check-up.

The doctor is checking if your prostate is swelling or enlarged. This is one of the most popular symptoms that tell of the not so pretty condition of your gland. It could actually be a sign of a prostate cancer. So, do not skip this part of your annual physical exam. If you have this kind of condition, you can no longer do the prostate massage procedure.

For prostate cancer patients, the prostate massage is no longer advised. There is a risk of spreading the cancer cells to different parts of the body. This is also true if you have prostatitis. Prostatitis is a kind of prostate disease wherein the gland has acquired an infection. If you do a prostate massage while you are infected, there is a risk that the infection will be transferred to other parts of your body. So, it’s a huge no-no.

Include prostate massage in your regimen while it’s still early. If you have relatives, like grandfather and uncle, who has prostate cancer or other forms of cancer, you must do this preventive measure. The mere fact that cancer is related to genes, increases you risk of developing the same sickness. So, check your family tree and try to see which of your relatives has been a victim of cancer.

The purpose of this massage is to stimulate your prostate and to make it release the alkaline content which it houses. This is the substance that accompanies the sperm cells during orgasm. On your usual release, there are alkaline residues inside your gland. This should be flushed out of your prostate to avoid the development of prostate diseases.

Do not get all too worried about the prostate cancer because there is a simple massage that could prevent the development of this dangerous disease. You can save your life from the pain of cancer, and you can also free yourself from the unsightly statistics. So, what are you waiting for? Include prostate massage on your weekly plan as soon as you can.

You did a smart thing by searching for information about the prostate symptoms you’ve been experiencing. The more you know about your physical symptoms, the better prepared you will be when you discuss the signs with your doctor. Whether it’s actually a cancer prostate issue, an enlarged prostate, or a side effect from a condition such as undiagnosed diabetes, most conditions can be managed. In fact, many cases can be brought completely under control if caught early enough in their development.

It’s normal for many men over the age of forty to experience problems with the prostate gland. They can be caused by hormonal imbalances, an underlying problem such as an infection, diabetes or high blood pressure. All of these issues can present themselves through ongoing prostate problems. Some symptoms can signal anything from a prostate infection to cancerous or benign tumors, all of which have different treatment methods. The important thing to remember is that the earlier you get yourself diagnosed as to what exactly is causing your prostate problem, the sooner you can get your condition under control.

Unlike a self breast exam that women do on a regular basis to check for signs of breast cancer, health issues concerning a cancer prostate issue cannot be diagnosed without having a prostate exam done by a qualified physician. This is done by a digital exam and it involves a physician inserting a gloved finger into the patient’s rectum to feel directly on the prostate gland. The prostate should feel firm and akin to a full water balloon with lots of give. The doctor will feel for hard spots which indicate abnormalities. The man will then require further testing to determine the cause, including cancer, prostate infections or benign tumors.

If you ignore the symptoms of a prostate problem, chances are good it will only continue to escalate. Whether or not it is a cancer prostate problem, it won’t go away on its own and will need to be handled through medical treatment, lifestyle adjustments or a combination of the two. There are a number of ways many non-serious prostate problems can be handled by the patient themselves through lifestyle modifications.

Don’t cause yourself anymore sleepless nights wondering if your recurring symptoms are cancer prostate related or simply complications from another illness such as diabetes. It’s important to get a physical from your primary care physician to not only find the root cause of your prostate problems, but also to set your own mind at ease. Remember, the faster your prostate problems are diagnosed, the better your chances are of managing your symptoms and making a full recovery.

People today are faced with so many distorted facts about cancer and too many just accept what’s on offer. Most will blindly follow authority without stopping and applying a bit of common sense. The following is information on what we are being told and believe to be the truth about cancer as well as facts we’re not being told.

Myth 1; People believe that cancer is a result of fate or bad luck, not the result of something they did.
Fact; All cancers no matter where they appear in or on the body are caused by the way we now live. They are all self caused. Many people blame genetics but that’s just an excuse to lay the blame on something beyond their control.

Myth 2; Nobody knows what causes cancer or why there is so much of it today.
Fact; Cancer is not evenly distributed around the world, and is only a problem in western developed countries and is rare in undeveloped countries. It has many contributing factors such as our wrong food choices, toxic chemicals and our sedentary lifestyle.

Myth 3; Only doctors know how to treat cancer with their 3 treatments of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.
Facts; While our mainstream medical system is very good at diagnosing cancer there is no question that alternatives or natural treatments are much more effective. Cancer is a degenerative disease and all degenerative diseases can be reversed. It’s never too late to do something about it.

Myth 4; All cancers if detected early can lead to a complete cure of the disease.
Fact; Believing that early detection leads to a cure is a carefully orchestrated deception. Cancer statistics are measured by a five year survival period, which is if you are still alive 5 years after being diagnosed you are statistically a survivor so the earlier they can detect cancer the sooner the clock starts running that measures this 5 year period. That is, it helps their statistics.

Myth 5; Doctors are taught that cancer is a foreign lump and if they can remove it all they have successfully beaten the disease.
Fact; Cancer will develop because of a condition within the body and by just removing the foreign growths, that doesn’t remove the condition that caused these growths to appear. That’s why it will often return as they haven’t removed the reasons why it first grew.

Myth 6; I don’t need to change the food I eat as my doctor told me it has nothing to do with cancer.
Fact; The food you eat everyday is without doubt the most causative factor in the development of cancer. “We are what we eat” and the typical western diet of processed food and convenience food is not known for its health giving qualities.

Myth 7; Getting sun burnt when we were young is the reason why someone will develop cancer of the skin or a melanoma.
Fact; For something that provides life on this earth the sun has received an enormous amount of bad press lately. Cancer commonly grows in some weak spot and the sun may determine where a growth will develop because of the irritation caused by the sunburn but it’s our appalling diet that causes it to grow. The sun has many health giving qualities as it provides us with vitamin D which we need.

Myth 8; The only way to stay cancer free is to have regular check ups.
Fact; Regular check ups is a great way to recruit people into the cancer industry, Most cancer checks are highly inaccurate and 20 to 30 percent of mammograms for breast cancer can produce false positives or false negatives. PSA tests for prostate cancer are also highly unreliable. Biopsy which is taking a small sample is much more accurate but very invasive. Preventing cancer by learning about its causes and practicing prevention is a much safer option.

Myth 9; The cure for cancer is just around the corner and we will only need to take a pill in the future to overcome the disease.
Fact; Progress with cancer research is a myth and sustaining hope for the development of a safe and effective drug is pointless. There are only natural ways to completely rid the body of cancer and that is to remove the factors that caused it to grow in the first place and allow the body to heal. It work’s for everyone.

Myth 10; Radiation and chemotherapy are safe and effective ways to remove cancer.
Fact; Both these treatments are carcinogenic and if someone who has undergone these treatments survives for long enough, they could or will develop independent cancers that are a direct result from those treatments. There are many other problems with these treatments as well.

The safest option to not die of cancer is not to get it in the first place and you do that by practising a little prevention. Cancer has many contributing factors which will weaken the immune system and it’s a weak immune system that will allow cancer cells to become established. The first requirement for anyone that’s been diagnosed with cancer is to strengthen the immune system and you do that by eating the food that’s been designed for human beings.

Is it so important to get a second opinion when you have been diagnosed with cancer? The answer is yes and there are several reasons. Some of the doctors do not encourage their patients to seek second opinions. These doctors may be afraid of losing revenue or threatened by having their patients believe some other doctors are more knowledgeable, or they just may not border consulting with other physicians. Although you trust your physicians, the intent of a cancer diagnosis demands that you feel 100% confident with the diagnosis and your treatment plan before proceeding any further. Obviously, a second opinion that concurs with the fist can give you up most confidence.

Having said so, although conformation is conforming, a second opinion can also add to or conflict with information you may have already received. However, a conflicting data can setup productive dialogue that leads to a more appropriate treatment plan and a better understanding of your situation.

Sometimes, some are given little choice in selecting physicians, treatment options and they want to make sure their medical system will do the right thing. A second consultation can provide the diagnostic support to help them obtain the appropriate care.

Sometimes, most of us might think that cancer is so common that the recommended treatment must be fairly standard among doctors. This was more true 20 years ago when that time the equipments were less sophisticated and treatment options were limited. Treatment today involves a lot of new test, medicines and procedures. You will want to receive the very best that the medicines can offer today, a combination of treatment options specifically designed for you.

Do not hesitant about requesting a second opinion; nor should a doctor be concerned about you are receiving one. On the contrary, this process should be encouraged, and any center or physician that discourages it should be willing to discuss with you the reasons for not supporting you on this very important issue.

Bladder cancer is a disease that occurs due to malignant growth inside the urinary bladder. Different types of malignant growths may lead to cancer inside one’s urinary bladder. It is a stage when abnormal cells multiply inside the bladder. there are different types of bladder cancer that occur in human body but the most common one is that where the growth begins in cells in the internal part of the bladder. The medical term of this disease or disorder is transitional cell carcinoma or urothelial cell carcinoma.

Bladder cancer, though a fatal diseases is curable if detected at an early stage and to detect it fast one needs to be aware of its signs and symptoms. The most common signs of bladder cancer are blood in urine, pain during release of urine, frequent urination, or frequent urge to urinate. However, none of these symptoms are specific to malignant growth inside the urinary bladder. these things also occur in case of non-cancerous disorders like prostate infections and cystisis. Besides, these are also symptoms of kidney cancer.

Tobacco is considered as the biggest encouraging factor for urinary bladder cancer. Excessive tobacco smoking causes more than 50 per cent of the total number of urinary bladder cancer cases in men and also a significant percentage in women. Quiting smoking is a very simple way to stay away from urinary bladder cancer. Researchers have found that men who have the habit of drinking water frequently are safer compared to those who drink less water, as far as possibility of occurrence of urinary bladder cancer is concerned. Presence of higher quantity of water inside the body means more dilute urine which reduces the possibility of bladder cancer. Apart from smoking, there are several occupational risks like working at rubber factory, metal industry, textile industry and printing press that often lead to bladder cancer. Physicians are of the opinion that due to continuous exposure to petroleum-based chemicals and hydrocarbons, auto mechanics are more prone to bladder cancer. Hairdressing is also considered as a risky profession as permanent hair dyes contain chemicals that can encourage this fatal disease.

Like other forms of cancer, biopsy the best way to diagnose bladder cancer. Known as urine cystology, this biopsy is obtained in voided urine and during the washing of bladder (cystoscopy). However, nowadays, several advanced urine bound markers are available for faster diagnosis of urinary bladder cancer, but they are quite expensive compared to ordinary biopsy.

Being a urological disorder, a urologist is the best person to visit in case urinary bladder cancer has been noticed or any of its symptoms have been noticed. The level of treatment of bladder cancer depends on the level of invasion of the tumor into the inner wall of the bladder. Superficial tumors that do not enter the muscle layer can be easily removed by using an electro cautery device. Besides, immunotherapy is often applied to treat and diminish the chance of recurrence of such tumors. Immunotherapy can be effective up to second and third stage of the disease. Beyond that instillation of chemotherapy is the only option for treatment of urinary bladder cancer.

Mesothelioma cancer affects the lining of internal organs and body cavities – most often the lining around the lungs and heart and the abdominal cavity. To understand how mesothelioma is diagnosed, it’s important to recognize how it forms and what effects it has on the body.

How Mesothelioma Develops

The medical community believes that exposure to asbestos is the only way patients get mesothelioma cancer. When people breathe in or swallow asbestos dust and fibers, the material attaches to the mesothelium, a thin tissue that coats the inside of our organs. Over time, the asbestos changes the cells, and those abnormalities lead to cancer. Asbestos was a popular insulating material for most of the last century because it was cheap and effective. People in industries like construction, ship and aircraft building, automotive, railroad and other fields were exposed to asbestos every day – unaware of the damage it could do.

Receiving a Diagnosis

Unlike cancers of the breast or colon, there are no quick and easy tests for mesothelioma. That’s unfortunate since it’s much less deadly when diagnosed early. Symptoms differ by type of mesothelioma. Pleural mesothelioma, which affects the lungs and is the most common form of the disease, results in chest pain, tiredness, shortness of breath, lower back pain and problems swallowing. Most of these symptoms are caused by pleural effusion, in which fluid accumulates in and around the lungs. Other types of mesothelioma cause symptoms such as stomach pain, nausea, vomiting and weight loss.

Since mesothelioma is a relatively rare form of cancer – and the time between exposure to asbestos and the development of mesothelioma can span decades – many doctors mistake symptoms of the disease for more common ailments. But when mesothelioma is suspected, the first step is typically a CT scan or MRI. If questionable results are found, a biopsy is performed. A needle biopsy collects a small amount of tissue and is less invasive; an open biopsy collects a larger tissue sample and may deliver a more accurate diagnosis. If mesothelioma is confirmed, the patient usually undergoes additional scans to determine if and where the disease may have spread.

After Diagnosis

A mesothelioma diagnosis is particularly devastating because, though there are treatments that prolong life, the disease is generally considered incurable. Your doctor will formulate a treatment plan that may consist of chemotherapy, radiation, surgery or a combination of these treatments. Your prognosis and the treatment regimen are based on factors like your age, overall health and the kind of mesothelioma you have. It’s during this period that some patients contact an attorney to help them pursue a monetary settlement from the people and/or company responsible for their asbestos exposure. This settlement can go a long way toward paying hospital bills, compensating for lost income and ensuring the financial stability of the family left behind.

If you would like to learn more about your mesothelioma diagnosis – or if you suspect that you may have undiagnosed mesothelioma – talk to a qualified oncologist.

Immune cells, histiocytes, multiply uncontrollably.

In Langerhans cell histiocytosis (also called “Histiocytosis X” referred to) there is an excessive, malignant proliferation of a particular cell type of the immune system, the so-called histiocytes. This increase can occur in various organs and tissues. The statistical frequency of Langerhans cell histiocytosis is 0.4 cases per 100,000 people.

There are three forms of Histiocytosis X.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis can be divided into 3 subtypes:

* Eosinophilic granuloma: A manifestation of the disease at one or more locations in the bones.

* Hand-Schuller-Christian disease: Occurrence of the disease (especially in infants) among others to the eyes, bones, gums, in the external ear canal and on the genitals.

* Disease Abt-Letterer-Siwe: It is (usually in infants and young children) to fever, skin lesions, foci in the bones and the lymphatic vessels as well as enlargement of liver and spleen.

Diagnostic procedures:

First indications of the presence of Langerhans histiocytosis arising from the complaints and the findings on physical examination. Further evidence to provide blood and urine tests, x-rays and magnetic resonance imaging and scintigraphy, continue to histological examination of tissue, such as bones from affected areas or from the skin.

Treatment depends on the nature of the disease.

The treatment is a function of each subtype present. Thus it is possible for a limited eosinophilic granuloma of the bone region, remove the “Knochenherd” operatively. If this district, however, are in a region that is less well suited for an operation) (eg, located very close to a joint that is a candidate radiotherapy. In a eosinophilic granuloma, which manifests itself in several places of the skeleton, the implementation of chemotherapy is more meaningful. This also applies to the disease Hand-Schuller-Christian disease and Abt-Letterer-Siewe that occur tend to be scattered in the body and are less limited regionally.

The forecast is – especially in individual herds bones good.

The prognosis of Langerhans cell histiocytosis is especially good if only a single “Knochenherd” is present. But is also in the other forms, the cure rate averages 70 percent. However, the cure rate in young children (under 3 years), 50 percent is slightly lower.
